Tackling Fundamental Questions in Physics and Materials Science

The Standard Model of particle physics describes the known building blocks of the Universe very successfully, but not all of its content. Muons help to test its limits: the muon itself, and the atoms it forms, can be measured with extreme precision. As a probe inside materials, the muon also reveals the quantum behavior of electrons and spins, which underpins next-generation technologies such as spintronics and quantum sensing.

Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconductors

Using muons to detect the tiny magnetic fields that arise spontaneously in some unconventional superconductors, a signature of exotic quantum states, in kagome metals and layered materials.

3D Spin-Polarization Studies of Functional (Super-)Spintronics Devices

Mapping how spins are polarized, layer by layer, inside functional spintronics devices, with finer lateral resolution once the muon microbeam is available.

Hybrid Interfaces of Quantum Materials

Probing at different depths what happens where molecular magnets meet superconductors and other quantum materials, by combining muons with β-NMR, a related technique using radioactive ions, at CERN.

Hunting for Rare Muon Observables

Searching for extremely rare muon decays and for an electric dipole moment of the muon, two possible signs of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Muonium Spectroscopy

Precision spectroscopy of muonium, an atom made of an antimuon and an electron, to test quantum electrodynamics and search for new physics.

Ordinary Muon Capture

Measuring how nuclei absorb muons, to benchmark the nuclear theory needed to interpret searches for neutrinoless double beta decay, a test of whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles.

Charge and Magnetization Radii of Light Nuclei

Precise measurements of the electric and magnetic extent of light nuclei, using muonic atoms at PSI and β-NMR at CERN, to benchmark nuclear theory and test quantum electrodynamics.
